VISITORS to a recent recruitment evening at Montrose Police Station were set an example of sound local policing with the presentation of an award to Special Constable Richard Martin.

He received the Force Excellence Award for Special Constables from Temporary Inspector Hamish Gray in acknowledgement of his continued efforts to combat rural crime in Angus.

Special Constable Martin was also nominated in the ‘Best Local Bobby’ category of this year’s NFU Mutual UK Country Crime Fighter Awards for his activities across the county in which he was placed runner-up by a panel of judges including TV personality Adam Henson and NFU Mutual Chairman Richard Percy.

Special Constable Richard Martin looks after more than 50 farms across Angus and his promotion of the use of SmartWater, which tags equipment with an invisible label allowing it to be more easily traced if stolen, was of particular interest to the judges.

He has also been instrumental in organising farm security awareness days attended by police, farmers, machinery dealers and NFU Mutual agents.

The local recruitment evening was organised by Montrose community officers Ally Hutchison and Tracy Brown and prospective candidates had the opportunity to speak to Special Constable Force Co-ordinator Constable Pete Dickerman and Special Constable Kerry Rooke who answered questions and provided an insight into their roles with Tayside Police.

Constable Hutchison said: “We had many visitors throughout the evening and I hope that the insight and knowledge gained will be of benefit.

“We are looking for more Special Constables to complement the ranks in Montrose and there are information packs at the front counter for anyone interested in joining”.
