A FUND-RAISING ceilidh and dinner has been organised for next month in memory of Montrose ‘Butterfly girl’ Adana Forsyth who died in 2008.
Adana suffered from the painful condition epidermolysis bullosa (EB), sometimes called Butterfly Syndrome, which caused her fragile skin to peel off at the slightest touch and she touched the hearts of thousands of people across the town, county and country due to her resilience and strength of character.
She and her mum Dianne became familiar all over Scotland as they devoted their efforts to raising awareness of the condition. They also represented EB charity DebRA all over the country, making television and personal appearances, and raising funds to support research into a cure.
Research into the condition is ongoing and progress has been made in recent years in identifying the genes that cause EB, but it remains incurable. Adana died peacefully in her sleep in November 2008, aged 10.
The ceilidh and dinner, which will cost £35 per ticket and be held in the Park Hotel on Saturday, February 16, is being organised by Adana’s cousin Laura Forsyth. A third year business managing and marketing student at Edinburgh University, Laura had to choose an organisation for a six-month placement as part of her course. Laura is an established supporter of DebRA and was keen to put herself forward to work for the charity.
She said: “They said they’d been thinking about doing this in Montrose for a while and if I was coming on board they’d definitely do it. They thought it would be ideal because it would be easy for me to travel back and forth to the town.
“With Adana being my cousin the whole family has always been involved with the charity and when I was at the academy I got involved with the English department, which produced a fund-raising CD, and raised money through other projects at the school.”
The evening will include a three-course meal, ceilidh and entertainment by dancers from the Gordon School of Dancing, a raffle and an auction. There will also be a presentation about DebRA, the latest research into EB and on Adana herself, which will be delivered by Laura.
Although arrangements are already in hand, Laura is looking for an overall sponsor for the event as well as some of its individual elements. She would also be keen to hear from anyone who could donate raffle prizes and lots for the auction.
She added: “That would be a huge help, and I’d be grateful for anything anyone could provide.”
Tickets are available by contacting Laura, Jaye or Sophie at DebRA on 01698 424210. Proceeds from the evening will go to the charity and anyone interested in providing sponsorship can contact Laura on the same telephone number.
