A GROUP of former RAF servicemen is trying to track down a Montrose colleague in the hope of organising a reunion.

Robert Willis contacted the Review this week to enlist the paper’s help in tracing Derek Lunan, as all other avenues of inquiry have drawn a blank.

Mr Lunan, service number 1961922, joined fellow trainee cooks at RAF Hereford on a one-year apprenticeship as part of No.4 Squadron 309 entry 1967/68. At the time it was common for teenagers aged 15 or 16 to enter the armed forces to learn a trade. Mr Lunan served for around nine years and Mr Willis said he now should be in his early 60s.

His former comrades are hoping to organise a reunion in Hereford, Herefordshire, the home of their old training camp. RAF Hereford, also known as RAF Credenhill, was a non-flying training base that was taken over in 1999 as a depot for the Special Air Service.

Although they know Mr Lunan was from Montrose originally and lived for a time in Fife, they have so far been unable to get in touch.

Mr Willis said: “We have tried many times to find Derek Lunan, but there are so many listed on the electoral role that all my efforts have failed.

“If anyone can help us locate our lost comrade please contact me. Perhaps there is a family friend or relative who may be able to help. Derek Lunan is the last of the original 22 squadron members to be found.”

Anyone with information about Mr Lunan can contact Mr Willis by e-mailing robert.willis@wanadoo.fr or dave.thompson@thomco.co.uk or by telephoning 01223 874460.
