MONTROSE teenager Jo Milne will this weekend take to the stage for the live final of a competition seeking the county’s best young chefs.

The Angus Young Chef of the Year competition, aimed at 16 to 23-year-olds, was launched during September’s A Taste of Angus Festival and invited entries from senior pupils, catering students and trainees, who had to submit detailed recipes for a three-course meal including at least five local ingredients.

Jo, a fifth year pupil at Montrose Academy, caught the judges’ eye with a mouth-watering menu of wintry pea and water cress soup, ginger salmon with mustard and roasted cherry tomatoes and mocha tiramisu which won her a place in the second round, cooking their chosen dishes in front of a panel of judges at Angus College.

Neil Jack, one of the judges from college, said the entrants had put forward some “wonderful ideas.”

He said: “The young chefs in this round all demonstrated a high degree of professionalism and excellent grasp of culinary skills. It was very difficult to choose who should go onto the final round, which bodes very well for the future culinary reputation of Angus.”

Jo will be up against Arbroath High School pupil Ashmita Bhaltarai in the final of the senior pupil category, for which the girls will cook their main courses at the Angus Farmers Market’s special Christmas market at Forfar Mart this Saturday.

She said: “I’ve been practicing the recipe and cooked it twice at school, once at Angus College and twice at home. I’m not sure about doing it live and under pressure but it should be good and will certainly be different.”

The winner of each category will receive a trophy and a day’s mentoring with top local chef Garry Watson of Gordon’s Restaurant in Inverkeilor.
