MONTROSE’S new £9million integrated sports centre and swimming pool is due to be completed this month, less than 18 months after the first sod was cut to mark the project’s launch.

Angus Council has said the scheme, which includes a six-lane pool, a viewing gallery and studio pool with moving floor, is now 90 per cent complete and within budget.

Neighbourhood services vice-convener Councillor Jeanette Gaul visited the site recently with local councillor Bill Duff to view the progress for herself.

The new pool, on the Marine Avenue site of the town’s old sports centre, also features a health suite with sauna, steam room and a relaxation area, a fitness suite and multi-purpose rooms for meetings and training.

Carried out by contractors Ogilvie Construction, the majority of the car park is now fully formed with a small number of parking spaces and final finishes to the roadway still to be carried out; external walls and roof coverings are complete; all external glazing has been installed and external doors are almost complete; internal glazed screens and glazed doors have been installed; internal walls and partitions have been constructed and finishing work is under way; the final fix of electrical and mechanical services is progressing; tiling to the pool tank and main pool tank has been completed.

In addition, tiling within pool halls, changing areas and toilets is close to completion and the main pool tank is starting to be filled with water.

Mrs Gaul said: “I was very impressed by the high quality of workmanship and the excellent range of facilities which will soon be available to residents of Montrose. This will be a huge asset to Montrose and I hope that swimmers of all ages and levels of ability will enjoy visiting the pool.”
