Cement vessel docks in new venture

IT IS some years since cargos of cement arrived at the Port of Montrose, but this is going to be a much more common occurrence now that a major British company, the Dudman Group, has taken silo space at the South Quay.
The silos still bear the name ‘Avebe’, and were used by that company for storing starch, in the days when there were numerous paper mills on the east coast of Scotland.
On Saturday the ‘Cementina’ arrived in port with the first cargo.
Work on pumping the cement powder off the vessel started on Tuesday, the period since the boat docked having been taken up with checking the equipment.
There have been previous cargos of cement at Montrose, although this was oilwell cement, in the P&O days at the South Quay.
No information is to hand about local customers but a lorry from Lovie, Cowbog, New Pitsligo, has been spotted at the quay.
Local shipments may well take the place of cargoes of cement taken north by train, passing through Montrose, dirling houses as they went.
The Dudman Group was formed 21 years ago and has grown from a haulage firm to an independent aggregate, ready-mixed concrete, recycled aggregate producer and cement importer with its own shipping arm, Independent Shipping Limited.
