Meet January deadline to find “inner peace”

AS THE January 31 filing deadline is just weeks away, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is calling on anyone who has yet to submit their 2011-12 tax return to do so now.

HMRC has found that people often felt a real sense of relief, or peace of mind, once they send in their return and has launched a new advertising campaign to encourage people to “do it today, pay what you owe and take a load off your mind”, so they can experience “inner peace”.

Any outstanding 2011-12 returns must be sent online to HMRC by January 31. Anyone submitting a return after this date will be subject to a £100 penalty, even if they have no tax to pay or pay your tax on time.

If completing an online return for the first time, registration for online filing has to be completed first at www.hmrc.gov.uk/online. A user ID and activation code will then be posted out to be received up to seven days later and, after an account has been activated, tax returns can be completed online.

The January 31 deadline also applies for the payment of any tax you owed for the 2011-12 tax year.

Further information on how to find “inner peace” is available online at www.hmrc.gov.uk/sa or by calling the Self Assessment helpline on 0845 9000 444.
