MSP approves better train service on east coast line

MSP NIGEL Don has welcomed the news of improved train services on the east coast. (See also page 19)

He said this will take cars off the roads and help the economy of Angus and the Mearns. He continued: “If people can’t travel easily, it’s harder for them to find work, get to college, and also link up with their families and friends.

“The new services will make it more practical for people to visit places like Stonehaven. And if it means fewer people driving over the notorious Laurencekirk junction, the risk of a major accident is at least slightly reduced.”

Whilst there are improvements to the service at Montrose, Mr Don particularly welcomed the announcement that, on Sundays, five more trains will call at Laurencekirk and three more at Stonehaven. There will be improved weekday services from these towns to Dundee and Glasgow.

Transport Minister Keith Brown said: “The Scottish Government has an absolute commitment to rail services and to doing all we can to encourage more people on to the trains with all the benefits that entails – less congestion on the roads, a reduction in carbon emissions and increased job and investment opportunities.”
