THERE will be some noise disturbance from Montrose Port over the next week as preliminary work on its £6 million quay project gets under way.
Keen to keep nearby residents up to date, the Port Authority has already carried out a neighbour notification exercise by hand-delivering letters to homes in Ferryden. Work began last week and is due to continue until Friday, January 25.
Exploratory bore holes will be drilled both on and offshore as part of a site investigation ahead of the renewal of berth six and the realignment of berth seven on the north quay, which is due to begin later in the year.
A previous construction project prompted complaints after a rhythmic thumping, caused by a percussion hammer used in the piling work for the harbour’s new deep water berths at the south quay, could be heard right across town. There were also complaints about the contractor’s operating hours as, although the approved hours were from 7am to 7pm these were extended on at least two occasions, prompting complaints to both local Angus councillors and Ferryden Community Council.
John Paterson, chief executive, said: “The work is being carried out on the north side but some noise might carry.
“It’s a site investigation to identify ground conditions for the future project and will last a couple of weeks. Thereafter the contract, which won’t be starting until the summer, won’t be starting until the summer.”
Although berth six is currently out of commission, it will be brought back in to use next week as the harbour is experiencing one its busiest Januarys ever and one source of business due to increase in the future is in the renewable energy sector.
The port handled its first consignments of wind turbine parts towards the end of last year and this week discharged and dispatched components for the St John’s Hill wind farm at Kinneff and the Meikle Carew windfarm near Stonehaven.
Mr Paterson added: “They’re now coming in from different manufacturers, who have realised there’s a port in Montrose, so it’s all quite encouraging.”
