AN ANNOUNCEMENT regarding the start date for construction of Montrose’s new Sainsbury supermarket is expected before the end of the year, the Review believes.

Local Councillor David May said that, in response to constituents’ inquiries, he contacted the company last week to ascertain its current position on the Montrose store which is still timetabled to start next year.

Work on the 22,500 sq ft store had been due to start in February, with completion by this autumn, but problems finalising legal issues related to the site meant the company had to revise its schedule.

Mr May said: “They’ve now secured the site and are still committed to Montrose. The expectation is they will start building in 2013 but there will be a more detailed announcement towards the end of the year.”

Planning permission for the store, which will be on the former Lochside Distillery site on Brechin Road, and promises up to 200 full and part-time jobs, was granted last September and the decision followed the company’s extensive public consultation with the local community.

Around 30 local supporters attended the planning meeting including local councillors as well as community councillors and retailers.

Mr May added: “It’s a matter of when, not if, which I’m delighted with. I spoke at the planning meeting in favour of Sainsbury coming to the town and this is good news.”
