Sainsbury’s update requested

MONTROSE councillors have been seeking clarification from supermarket operator Sainsbury regarding when work on its new local store is due to start.

The company reiterated its commitment to the town last October and had been expected to make an announcement by the end of last year regarding the scheme, but councillors David May and Mark Salmond have been in touch with the company again since no announcement was made.

Work on the 22,500 sq ft store had been due to start last February, with completion by the autumn, but problems finalising legal issues surrounding the Brechin Road site meant the company had to revise its schedule.

Planning permission for the store, which promises up to 200 full and part-time jobs, was granted by Angus Council in September, 2011, and the decision followed the company’s extensive public consultation with the local community.

Both Mr Salmond and Mr May said they have spoken with a Sainsbury representative, who reiterated the company’s commitment to the development project, and asked for an update on the situation.

Mr Salmond said: “I am delighted to have received confirmation that Sainsbury are fully committed to building the Montrose store which, when operational, could create over 200 jobs and will benefit local food producers.

“There has been great concern in Montrose, after the hard work by the community to secure the store, about the delay in building the supermarket.

“I have also managed to secure a meeting in Montrose with a senior representative of Sainsbury to brief community representatives on Sainsbury’s plans for the new store and its build timetable. I have stressed to Sainsbury’s representative that they need to keep Montrose residents updated on their plans and they have agreed to make a public statement early next month.”

A company spokesman this week confirmed that a meeting in Montrose has been requested, although no date has yet been arranged.
