LOCAL councillor David May has welcomed a financial lifeline for the South Montrose Regeneration Project, which was included in this year’s Angus Council budget.

The future of the scheme was in doubt at the end of last year after the local authority revealed a £45 million funding shortfall. It was, however, allocated match funding of £3.4 million from the authority’s capital fund and was one of four projects to benefit from a pot of £9 million.

Commissioned by the council and partner organisations, the South Montrose masterplan focuses on the industrial area to the north of the harbour and assesses opportunities for growth in the area, including the harbour itself, through new product development and investment, support services for offshore renewable energy scheme and industry development to stimulate regeneration.

Councillor May this week called for the project to receive wider backing, particularly from Central Government.

He said: “Being a Montrose councillor, as well as a former convener of infrastructure services, I have argued for this inclusion as I am aware of the potential benefits arising from the regeneration of this area of Montrose, especially with servicing and supply for the offshore wind farms.

“Having allocated the funding from the council’s capital budget, in order for this to become a reality” we will need the co-operation of partners such as local companies, developers as well as Scottish Enterprise and the Scottish Government, but having this in the council provisional capital budget may well help to lever in more money from partners.

“There are very considerable benefits from the South Montrose Regeneration Project not only for the local economy but also in creating much needed jobs in Angus as a whole.”
