THE HUNT is now on for the best young chef in Angus in a new competition launched this week.

Part of the Taste of Angus Festival, the Angus Young Chef of the Year is open to young people aged between 16 and 23 and is split into two categories – young chefs who are in S5 or S6 and young chefs who are in full-time education or undergoing training in the catering or hospitality industry.

Entry is free and the winner of each category will be presented with an Angus Young Chef of the Year 2012 trophy and receive a day’s mentoring with Garry Watson, head chef at the award-winning Gordon’s Restaurant in Inverkeilor.

The competition is organised in association with Angus College and Angus Council’s education department. The first round involves submitting detailed recipes for a starter, main course and dessert involving at least five local ingredients.

The judging panel will then select a representative from each Angus secondary school and 10 catering students or trainees to participate in a cook-off at Angus College

Allison Innes, principal teacher health improvement at Montrose Academy, said: “This competition will provide pupils with an insight into the excellent quality and range of foodstuffs available in the local area while also developing their creativity.”

Two competitors from each category will then be selected to compete against each other at Angus Farmers’ Market Christmas Fair on Saturday, December 22, when the two winners of the Angus Young Chef of the Year will be chosen and announced.
