Local nominees for Best Bar None awards
THREE Montrose hostelries have been shortlisted in this year’s Best Bar None Angus awards, which are due to be decided in November.
Former overall winner Sharky’s, along with the George Hotel, has been nominated in the Best Bar category, while the South Esk Inn has made it to the shortlist for Best Pub.
Both Sharky’s and the South Esk have also been nominated for the Community Engagement award.
The awards, organised by the Angus Alcohol and Drugs Partnership, have attracted entries from accredited pubs, bars and nightclubs from across the county and this years’s winners will be announced at a ceremony in the Carnoustie Golf Hotel in November.
Partnership chairman Robert Peat said the organisations has been encouraged to again see a wide range of premises nominated.
He said: “We have a number of new and returning premises which are keen to gain the accreditation and accolade of being a Best Bar None Angus establishment. I congratulate everyone who has made it to this stage and are assured of securing an award.
“The race is now on to be the best bar or pub and indeed, the ‘best of the best’ licensed establishment in Angus. This year we have a new category, The Listeners’ Vote and I would like to encourage members of the public to visit Wave 102 to vote for their favourite place to socialise within their community.
“I look forward to seeing and congratulating all the premises at the Angus Best Bar None Awards Ceremony on November 24 at Carnoustie Golf Hotel and Spa.”
Eileen McArthur of Focus on Alcohol Angus also said she is particularly pleased that two other new categories have been introduced, for Best Newcomer and Community Engagement.
She added: “We have been able to introduce these due to the standard and the profile of the establishments entering for the awards. In addition, we have a further category for off-sales that is being supported by the Scottish Business Crime Centre.
“The Safer Retailer Award: Alcohol Category will also be awarded for the first time. We have encouraged small retailers to step forward to be acknowledged for their best practice in relation to the off sales of alcohol.”
The awards are also being backed by Tayside Police and Angus division commander Superintendent Kevin Lynch said the scheme allow licensed premises to demonstrate their commitment to trouble-free socialising.
He said: “Best Bar None continues to be an excellent example of business people actively creating safer communities around Angus through the promotion of good practice within licensed premises.
“I am keen to see that people living in and visiting Angus enjoy themselves in a safe and trouble free environment and Accredited Best Bar None premises collectively have shown their commitment to this ethos.”
