Many and varied elements in life
The MONTROSE and District Probus Club met on Tuesday, January 8, for its first meeting of 2013.
It is a long-established tradition that on this occasion, the president gives a talk on his own personal history and background.
The current president, John Macpherson, entertained and enlightened members with a graphic account of his personal biography.
A keen photographer, and a former president of the local photographic society, it was only fitting that John should illustrate his life’s journey with many interesting slides and pictures.
Born in Bridge of Weir in Renfrewshire, he came to Montrose as a young lad, to be brought up by his grandparents in Seagate.
John left school to work as an apprentice blacksmith at Brown’s where work was undertaken for destinations all over Scotland, from Glasgow to Stornoway.
A lover of music, he played both in the Town Band and in the Riverside Jazz Band.
For a while John served in the Merchant Navy, and worked in Chivers’, but eventually set up his own business as a blacksmith and farrier.
He delighted in working with horses, and his craftsmanship and skill can be seen in the many wrought-iron gates, spiral stairways and other artefacts he has designed and created.
Currently the chairman of the Clan Macpherson Association, John was thrilled and honoured to be given the task of designing the gate for a clan memorial cairn in Glen Truim to commemorate the famous 18th century Clan Chief known as Cluny of the ’45.
With his wife, Iris, a former nurse, John enjoys Scottish Country Dancing and has been present at many prestigious events throughout the country.
Probus members feel fortunate to have a man who touches life at so many tangents as their president this year.
