Many thousands raised since cribbage league was founded
SINCE it was founded, Montrose Cribbage League has raised the incredible sum of £15,260 for good causes in and around the local area.
The exact date of founding had become obscure, but a 25th anniversary celebration was held last Tuesday at the League’s regular venue, the British Legion clubrooms.
Donations have ranged from £35 for the Cats’ Protection League in 1992, to nine separate gifts of £1,000.
It was in 1979 that Jean West, manageress of the Royal Arch Bar, asked local detective Brian Leask if he knew a good cause that should benefit from cash raised at a darts and pool evening.
He suggested a young girl in Ferryden, Tracy Page, who had been born profoundly deaf, but whose hearing could be improved by a ‘phonic ear’.
A committee headed by Jean and Royal Arch proprietor Allan Crichton eventually raised £2,860 - £1,000 for Tracy and the balance helping two other girls with hearing difficulties. The presentation was made by Noel Edmonds at a children’s disco at the Links Hotel.
Among the fund-raising activities were cribbage evenings, and it was from them that the idea of the charity fund-raising league evolved.
In 1998 Tracy and her boyfriend lost their lives in a fire. It was suggested that if special smoke alarms had been available, the tragedy might not have happened.
So among the league’s donations in 2002 was £400 towards providing these alarms, which are now much more readily accessible.
