National School sport week a success

THREE-TIME Olympic silver medallist Katherine Grainger has hailed Bank of Scotland National School Sport Week a huge success in Angus after thousands of schoolchildren across the country joined in London 2012-themed celebrations.

The annual sporting celebration has grown to include nearly 2,000 schools and half a million pupils from every local authority area in Scotland – more than 75 per cent of all the country’s schools – all taking part in a range of Olympic-inspired activities in 2012.

Grainger – who will be competing at an amazing fourth Olympics when she takes to the water in the double sculls in London – met more than 750 youngsters when she carried the Olympic Flame at the Toryglen Football Centre in Glasgow.

The 36-year-old, who passed the Torch on to Paralympic wheelchair basketball star Mike Kerr, said: “It meant so much to hold the torch, it really did.

“It was a very special moment as the Olympics has obviously been a massive part of my life for the last 15 years.

“Today showed that it is not just Olympians who get excited by the torch.”

Delivered in partnership with Sportscotland, the opening of Bank of Scotland National School Sport Week was marked by Paralympic and Olympic sport taster sessions, and an unofficial torch relay involving more than 70 schools.

And Grainger, who will be aiming to turn triple silver into a career-crowning gold this summer to go with her six world titles, said: “I think for people at an impressionable age to be this close to the flame is amazing for them.

“It’s a moment they will remember for rest of their life.”

Bank of Scotland National School Sport Week took place from June 11 to 15 and is Scotland’s biggest school sport event with nearly 2,000 schools and half a million pupils taking part, staging their own games. Find out more at www.schoolsportweekscotland.org.
