New bus service

Requests by Hillside residents regarding the village’s buses have been heeded by Angus Council, which this week started a new service to Montrose town centre.

The new shoppers’ service, which began running on Monday, is available for passengers between Hospital Road in Hillside and Montrose.

The contract has been awarded to M.W. Nicoll Hirers (Laurencekirk) Ltd., which will run the Monday to Friday morning return service.

The two new journeys have been provided by diverting the 10am Service 8 from Laurencekirk along Hospital Road where it will pass at 10.17am. This will be numbered Service 8A, while the return journey, Service 9A, will leave from Montrose Railway Station at 12.30pm.

The use residents make of these journeys will be monitored to provide the council with accurate information on passenger numbers.

Information was updated at the relevant bus stops ahead of the changes and a paper timetable will follow as soon as possible.

The new service’s introduction was this week welcomed by local councillor Bill Duff who commended the authority for its actions.

He said: “I‘d like to thank Angus Council’s transport department for working hard to get this service started. Hopefully it will be well used by residents and will become a permanent feature of our bus services.”

At the end of this month a number of tenders for local bus service provision across the Angus area will be released to replace other contracts which are due to end in May 2013.

The council has said that a tender will be included for a bus service serving Hospital Road, which will include different options for the frequency of service that could potentially be provided.

A report will go to committee for members to consider what level of service should be supported, at the same time as setting the budget for local bus service provision for the financial year 2013/2014.
