Olympic inspiration as torch passes through

LOCAL people of all ages in Montrose and the wider district turned out in their hundreds last week to welcome the Olympic torch relay as it passed through the area.

Last Tuesday was the 25th day of the 70-day relay around the UK which saw the torch cross the county border from Aberdeenshire to Angus. Its route brought it through Marykirk to Hillside, where 18-year-old Angus swimmer Joe Lipworth, 17-year-old Alice Booth from Aberdeen and Doug Smith (42), also from Aberdeen, were cheered on as they bore the flame through the village just before 10am.

In Montrose, hundreds of people started to line the route from just after 9am and gave torch bearers Jim Brown from Fettercairn, Conor Gordon from Falkirk, Emma Mitchell and Mark Gauci from Aberdeen, and Toby Veale from Peterculter enthusiastic encouragement as they made their way along Coronation Avenue, North Esk Road, the High Street and Hume Street.

The relay then moved on to Brechin and to Forfar where, as a warm-up to its arrival, 156 pupils from every school in Angus took part in a world-record breaking attempt to beat the men’s 10,000 metre relay time of 27 minutes 1.17 seconds.

Consisting of six pupils from every secondary school and two from every primary school in Angus, the youngsters threw themselves into the attempt with enthusiasm, cheered on by proud parents, grand-parents and friends.
