EXCITEMENT is building ahead of the arrival of the Olympic torch, which will pass through Hillside and Montrose this Tuesday.
More than 1,000 communities are included on the route which, in Angus, will also include Brechin and Forfar. And two Montrosians will have the honour of carrying the flame on Monday, June 11 and Tuesday, June 12, the 24th and 25th days of its 70-day journey around the UK.
Carolyn Pierpont and Ewen Ross will be part of the relay as it passes through Forfar and Banchory respectively.
All of the 8,000 torch-bearers have been nominated by friends and family for their community work and achievements.
Kindled by the rays of the sun at Olympia, the site of the original Olympic Games in Greece, the passing of the flame from one country to another, from one torch-bearer to another, symbolises peace, unity and friendship.
On Tuesday the flame will pass through Marykirk before heading south to Hillside, where it will be carried through the village on the A937, starting just beyond Houghton Drive, at 9.48am.
It will then start its route through Montrose on Coronation Avenue, near its junction with Newhame Road, at 9.58am. From there it will be carried along North Esk Road into Murray Street and along the High Street before the route turns down Hume Street, finishing on Western Road.
The torch-bearers for this leg of its journey have all come from outwith the area: Conor Gordon, 18, from Falkirk; Jim Brown, 67, from Fettercairn; Toby Veale, 16, from Peterculter; Emma Mitchell, 16, from Aberdeen and Mark Gauci, 25, from Aberdeen.
Organised trips by 40 Angus schools will see staff accompany around 4,500 pupils, who will be able to see the torch from designated viewing points at safe on and off-street locations in Hillside, Montrose, Brechin and Forfar.
Local councillor David May said: “I hope this will be a big boost to young people to embrace sport and the Olympics. We may not all be Olympic champions but we can all take part in sport whatever our ability.”
