Plea to consider pets in firework plans
Firework season can be a stressful time for pets, but Dogs Trust says this can be reduced or avoided with some forward planning.
WITH the firework season approaching, event organisers are being urged to consider the possible trauma their displays could cause their neighbours’ pets.
Dogs Trust is warning that setting off fireworks with pets in the vicinity can cause them needless stress which can be avoided with some forethought.
Julie Morrison, Dogs Trust training and behaviour adviser, said: “While this signals fun for people, a recent survey from Dogs Trust revealed that 72 per cent of pet dogs are frightened of fireworks and 90 per cent of dog owners say they alter their routine during the November celebrations around Fireworks night and during Diwali to try to minimise the trauma on their petrified pooches.
“If you’re organising a local fireworks display please consider your neighbour’s pets. A bit of forward planning can go a long way to make life less stressful for pets at this time of year.”
If a dog has not been exposed to loud noises during its essential socialisation period (3-14 weeks old), when it gets older it might have difficulties coping with frightening sounds like fireworks and Certain breeds of dogs also seem to be more sensitive to noise than others.
