Postie Chic retires after 25 years

editorial image

MONTROSE postie Raymond (Chic) Nicoll has retired from Royal Mail after 25 years’ service.

Born at Bridge of Dun and educated at Dun School and Montrose Academy, Mr Nicoll’s first job, for 20 years, was with Willie Nicoll (no relation), working with cars and tyres in Ferry Street.

He joined the Royal Mail and became a weel-kent face in High Street, Ferryden, St Cyrus, Bervie, back to the town, then Lunan and Bridge of Dun.

He has always had a great interest in sport, and played both football and cricket.

And paradoxically it was Arbroath cricketer Ron Kydd who suggested that he should take up refereeing.

He refereed amateurs and juniors, and was then promoted to the senior list.

He has run the line at an Old Firm game, and was on the line when Aberdeen played Rangers and the Aberdeen ‘keeper had his collar bone broken on a very wet Pittodrie in 1990. He retired from officiating in 1995.

He was presented with six crystal glasses, a bottle of Bacardi to fill them, and money. His wife, Edith, received a floral arrangement.

Chic will be missed not only in the office, where he told many a story about his refereeing exploits but also by his many customers.

He is missing the company both of fellow workers, and his customers.

However, Chic says one of the benefits of his retirement is he will now be able to take his grandson to watch Dundee United more often.
