STAFF and governors of the Rossie Young People’s Trust, formerly Rossie School, came together on Friday to pay tribute to principal teacher George Alexander who retired after 34 years’ teaching.

Mr Alexander, who received an MBE in 2001 for his services to young people, joined the staff in 1978 as a building instructor in the training school and by 1994 had successfully completed his professional teaching qualifications at Strathclyde University when he was promoted to senior teacher of craft and design.

As assistant principal teacher from April 2001, he continued to develop his work with young people, helping them to develop their skills through external partnerships with local companies. This allowed them to experience the world of work and help them in their transition back into the wider community. Mr Alexander was appointed principal teacher in 2003.

Presenting him with a gold pocket watch, John Sutcliffe, chairman of the board of governors, said: “So many young people have benefited from your sincerity, common sense, and commitment to the organisation we thank you for all your hard work”.

Mr Alexander, who was accompanied by his wife Pat, thanked all those present and said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed working with everybody at Rossie, especially the children and young people. The education team is the finest team I have every worked with.”
