MONTROSE Day Care Centre has received a windfall of almost £3,000 from a local charity which is winding up after almost 25 years.

A donation of £2,914.51 was presented to centre manager Irene Mitchell and Sandy Moncur, chairman of the board of directors, on Tuesday by the Montrose Medical Trust.

The charity was set up in 1988 by local man Dave Guthrie with the aim of providing equipment and assistance, not then provided by the NHS, to help keep people in their own homes instead of going in to care.

Latterly the trust has been headed by Mr Guthrie’s son, Dave, who said the charity is being wound up because it has run its course.

He said: “At that time, if someone needed an item of special equipment at home there was no real way they could do that so there was a need for the trust.

“Years have passed and things have improved so much that we felt it has run its course, although it has done a lot over the years. We had a meeting to decide where the remaining funds were to go and the day care centre was top of the list.”

Mr Guthrie said that the “strangest” case it handled was saving the original clock from Montrose Infirmary, put up for sale several years ago by NHS Tayside, which now hangs in the Links Health Centre.

He added: “It was put in to Taylor’s Auctions but Ian Taylor contacted the trust’s directors to tell us about it and it was money from the medical trust that was used to save it.”

Irene Mitchell, centre manager, said the funds will be put towards the centre’s continuing refurbishment.

She said: “I’d like to thank the trust for thinking about the centre out of all the organisations they could have chosen and it’s a fantastic amount that will be put to good use.”
