Welcome for timetable changes
A NEW timetable improving services for north east rail travellers was this week welcomed by area MSP Nanette Milne.
The revised national timetable, which will come into effect on Sunday, December 9, has been introduced by ScotRail and Transport Scotland to help boost services, which now include more calls and extra Sunday services.
Several stations between Dundee and Aberdeen, including Montrose, will gain more frequent services – providing a more balanced spread of calls throughout the day.
On Sundays there will be two extra services from Edinburgh to Aberdeen, as well as an additional service in the other direction.
Transport Minister Keith Brown said the improvements will encourage new passengers to travel by rail for commuting, educational and leisure opportunities and help current passengers to get out earlier, stay out later and get around more frequently.
The Sunday timetable improvements include a new 12.47pm Aberdeen to Edinburgh service calling at Portlethen,
Stonehaven, Laurencekirk, Montrose, Arbroath, Carnoustie, Broughty Ferry, Dundee, Leuchars, Kirkcaldy, Inverkeithing and Haymarket; a new 4.05pm Edinburgh to Aberdeen service calling at Haymarket, Inverkeithing, Kirkcaldy, Markinch, Cupar, Leuchars, Dundee, Broughty ferry, Carnoustie, Arbroath, Montrose and Stonehaven and the existing 9.15am Edinburgh to Dundee train being extended to Aberdeen, calling additionally at Arbroath, Montrose, Stonehaven and Portlethen.
Steve Montgomery, ScotRail’s managing director, said: “The new timetable provides real benefits for customers in the North east, including extra Sunday services and more station calls. This will mean better links between communities and will support Scottish business. It also underpins our focus on delivering more services and encourages more people than ever to switch to rail.”
Dr Milne, Scottish Conservative MSP for the North East, said: “This is a welcome expansion in the train timetable for communities across the North east.
“Many constituents have highlighted the need for additional train services on Sundays and having raised these points with First ScotRail I am delighted that they have announced a significant increase in both calls at stations as well as additional services.
“I also hope that further consideration will be given to providing one off additional rail services or additional carriages for individual sporting events when large numbers of fans are travelling from the North East.”
Information has been available from ScotRail’s website at www.scotrail.co.uk and booking offices since Monday. Paper timetables will be issued four weeks before of the timetable’s introduction.
