Montrose 1 Berwick 3

MONTROSE failed to build on their cup triumph over East Fife when they lost at home to Berwick Rangers last Tuesday.

The final scoreline flattered Berwick as at 1-1, Montrose looked the more likely to go on and win the game.

With Chris Hegarty suspended, Steven Tweed was forced into one change from the East Fife game and brought in former Motherwell and East F
ife player Stevie Nicholas as a trialist.

Nicholas played up front off main striker John Gemmell. Sean Anderson dropped to the right of midfield, with Hugh Davidson moving into the centre.

Berwick had former Montrose players Mark Peat in goal and Elliot Smith at left-back and Fraser McLaren, who had a spell on loan at Links Park, was in their attack.

In a strong wind and driving rain, Berwick kicked-off, looking to underline their promotion hopes.

In four minutes, McNeil stepped back over his goal line as he held a Callaghan free-kick, but the keeper had been fouled.

A minute later, a Watson free-kick was met by the head of Gemmell and Peat tipped the ball for a corner.

In 12 minutes, a wind-assisted effort from Smith had to be tipped over by McNeil.

Berwick took the lead from the resulting corner. Little's flag-kick came off a Montrose head on the front post and fell kindly for McLaren to nod home from close range.

Berwick looked for more and a shot on the turn from Gray was blocked on the line by Milligan.

In 29 minutes a mistake by Crighton gave the ball to Currie and McNeil made a save to deflect the ball for a corner.

Montrose were rocking and a minute later, McNeil saved at the feet of Gray after a mistake by Milligan.

Montrose had a chance in 37 minutes. Nicholas charged down and attempted clearance kick from Peat. The ball broke to Gemmell but his stab towards an empty net lacked power and Ewart got back to clear just short of the line.

Play continued and Anderson stabbed a cross wide.

The home side looked more in the mood and in 38 minutes a fierce drive from Milligan was saved by Peat.

Right on half-time, Davidson became the first booking for a midfield foul, with the referee indicating the offence was persistent fouling.

Montrose had the elements more or less in their favour at the start of the second half and they took the game to Berwick.

After three minutes, an Anderson header from a Watson free-kick hit the bar.

Montrose were level in 50 minutes when Paul Watson headed home an Anderson cross for his second goal in successive games.

In 53 minutes, Ewart was booked for elbowing trialist Nicholas.

Ten minutes later, Watson was booked, also for persistent offending.

Montrose looked the more likely to get their noses in front and in 64 minutes a Watson shot was beaten away by Peat. Seconds later, Gemmell was being fouled as he tried to get clear and his shot went just over.

Disaster struck Montrose in 74 minutes when Berwick scored with their first effort at goal of the second half. Ex-Arbroath player Alan Brazil shot home from the edge of the box.

Montrose attacked and when Campbell played the ball across goal, a defender was fortunate to deflect it to safety with Gemmell coming in.

Berwick wapped things up in 82 minutes when McLaren headed home a Callagan free-kick.

Nicol went on for Anderson, but there was no way back for Montrose.
