Montrose 1 Albion Rovers 0
MONTROSE FC brought the curtain down on their season with a 1-0 win at home to Albion Rovers on Saturday. The victory by a youthful Mo side means the club finish in fifth place in Division Three, two points outside the play-off positions.
Steven Tweed was true to his word and gave youth its chance in the final game of the season.
There were three changes from the side which won at Berwick. Paul Stewart, Roddy Hunter and the manager himself dropped out of the starting 11 and in came Hugh Davidson after suspension and Aaron Sinclair and Daryl Nicol for their debuts.
Gordon Pope moved to central defence alongside Sean Crighton with Sinclair at left-back.
Davidson joined Stephen Black in the centre of midfield with Fraser Milligan on the left and Nicol was up front alongside Craig O'Reilly.
Tweed and Stewart were on the bench alongside Greg Kelly, John Maitland and another youngster Jordan Leyden.
The club made a pre-match announcement that Hunter, Stewart and Kelly would not be offered contracts and that Black was returning to the USA to continue his education. With an number of other players also probably playing their last games for the club, there was a nostalgic feel to proceedings.
A group of Montrose fans tried to spark a party atmosphere by dressing in beachware and carrying inflatables, but unfortunately the rain poured down throughout the 90 minutes.
Montrose were first to threaten in eight minutes when Millagan chipped the ball forward for Nicol to score, but the flag was up for offside.
In 11 minutes, a shot from Davidson hit McGowan and went for a corner, then two minutes later, Milligan worked a one-two with Nicol and his shot was put for a corner by keeper Ewings.
From the corner, Montrose took the lead. Bradley's corner was headed down by Davidson and Gordon Pope poked the ball into the net through the legs of the keeper.
Albion hit back and Division Three's player of the year, Bobby Barr had a shot turned for a corner by Bullock. From the corner, Donnelly had a header saved.
In 21 minutes, Bullock saved at the feet of Harty after Crighton was short with a passback.
Montrose were showing plenty of promise and in 29 minutes a Bradley cross was headed for a corner by McKeown, with Davidson behind him and certain to score.
The home side suffered an injury blow in 32 minutes when Milligan went down with what looked like a hamstring injury and was replaced by Paul Stewart for his Links Park farewell.
Harty had two efforts saved by Bullock, then in 38 minutes, O'Reilly fired in a fierce shot which was turned for a corner.
A minute into the second half, Bradley sent in a cross and O'Reilly flicked the ball wide on the near post.
Montrose pressed looking for the second goal their play deserved. Nicol fed O'Reilly and the keeper did well to block, then Nicol robbed right-back Reid and ran in on goal, but Ewings saved with his feet.
The Mo suffered another injury blow in 63 minutes when O'Reilly was stretched off and replaced by Leyden, another product of the Montrose youth system.
Montrose were out of luck again in 68 minutes. A shot from Stewart was pushed up and on to the bar by Ewings and the ball bounced off the bar and over the inrushing Leyden.
The home side were hit by injury again in 70 minutes when Nicol had to limp off and was replaced by Maitland.
In 75 minutes, Fleming was booked for a foul on Bradley and Ewings joined him in the book for dissent.
Montrose continued to attack and Ewings came off his line to clear from Black.
Six minutes from time, keeper Ewings came outside his box to impede Bradley and walked straight off, not even waiting for the second yellow card and the red which signalled his dismissal.
Ten man Albion kept plugging away. A Barr shot was tipped over by Bullock, then four minutes into added time, the keeper gratefully flopped on an Adam free-kick.
Montrose: Bullock 7, Hegarty 7, Sinclair 7, Davidson 7, Pope 7, Crighton 6, Bradley 7, Milligan 5 (Stewart), O'Reilly 7 (Leyden), Nicol 7 (Maitland), Black 6. Subs: Tweed, Kelly.
