FOUR Montrose Academy students are making their mark in club, county and national bridge competitions.

Jake Milne, now studying at Dundee University, and Iain Graham are part of a team representing Montrose Bridge Club in a Central District Team competition which takes place over two days in Dundee. They are taking on the best from Perthshire, North Fife, Angus and Tayside.

Jake and Iain have also qualified for the Central District Pairs semi-final which takes place at Dundee Bridge Club at the end of the month.

John Macdonald and Scott Rennie were recently selected to play for Banchory in a Junior Intercity internet bridge match against Istanbul.

Next month they travel to Edinburgh to play at the Carlton Club where John, Scott and Iain are representing Montrose Academy in the National Schools Competition for the Abbot Cup and the next day all four students then take on the best of Scotland’s junior bridge players in a National Pairs Competition for the Frischmann Cup.

Jake and his partner Wendy Collier won the local heat of the Bobby Allan, which is a National competition for mixed pairs. They were placed 18th overall from a field of nearly 400.

Together with Matthew Robb, who is currently at Glasgow University, they all took up bridge about 18 months ago when Montrose Bridge Club were invited to teach the game at the Academy as part of the School’s enrichment programme.
