Celebrating life of the Marquis

A major national exhibition celebrating the quartercentenary of the birth of James Graham, 1st Marquis of Montrose is underway at Montrose Museum.

The exhibition, entitled To Win or Lose it All – A Celebration of the Life & Campaigns of James Graham 1st Marquis of Montrose 1612 – 1650, hosts the largest collection of objects relating to the marquis which has ever been brought together.

These include paintings, weapons, portraits, documents, furniture, silver and the heart of Montrose. The exhibition is complemented by comprehensive display panels interpreting James Graham’s extraordinary life and death: his remarkable military successes, the romantic legend and his legacy.

There will be a series of lectures during the time of the exhibition, given by Malcolm McVittie, chairman of the 1st Marquis of Montrose Society.

The first took place last Thursday and was entitled Montrose- A Candidate for Immortality’: a biographical account of the marquis. The second is on Wednesday, August 22 and is ‘Montrose and his Conscience’: an explanation of his change of allegiance. The final lecture is on Wednesday, September 19 and on this occasion the subject is‘Montrose’s Annus Mirabilis’: his military campaign. All lectures will be held at Montrose Museum & Art Gallery, Panmure Place, Montrose DD10 8HF The exhibition runs from July 14 to September 22.
