Folk Club concert will be a knock out

ONE of the highlights of the current season at Montrose Folk Club will be the appearance in a special concert at the Links Hotel, Montrose, on Friday, March 30 of Americana star Rachel Harrington and her band The Knock Outs.

Rachel previously appeared at the club in a duo format with Lindisfarne Band member, Rod Clements. On this occasion, she will be playing as part of the debut UK tour for her brand new all-girl four piece band, The Knock Outs. The Knock Outs are Alisa Milner on fiddle, Rebecca Young on bass and Aimee Tubbs on drums.

Rachel is one of the rising stars of Americana. Her outstanding voice has been compared to Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch and others.

Originally from Oregon, she released a critically acclaimed debut album in 2007 entitled “The Bootleggers Daughter”. Her 2008 follow-up record, City of Refuge, featured several guests, including the legendary Tim O’Brien. Many of the songs were based on characters and stories from the American West.

Rachel and the band are touring Europe and the UK to promote the new album, simply titled Rachel Harrington and The Knock Outs, which was recorded at the legendary Avast Studio in Seattle. The new album covers the whole spectrum of Americana music from the Blues of Ettea James to the Country Soul of Loretta Lynn. The tracks range from the wall-of-sound sixties soul rave-up of “He’s My Man” to the woman’s lib Honky Tonk of “Wedding Ring Vacation” to the cry-in-your-beer Gem, “I’d Like to Take This Chance”. Rachel was the winner in 2011 of the famous Merlfest Songwriting contest. She has written a new batch of songs for the band, which betray influences of everyone from Loretta Lynn, Ray Charles and Buck Owens to Gram Parsons.

Everyone is welcome at Montrose Folk Club on Friday, March 30 for what is certain to be a great night of Americana music. The doors open at 7.30pm with Rachel Harrington and the Band on stage at 8pm.
