Further potential for heritage tourism

ANGUS MSPs Graeme Dey and Nigel Don visited the Angus Archives recently to highlight the further potential the area’s heritage holds for tourism.
They met Norman Atkinson, Angus Council cultural services manager, and archive manager Fiona Scharlau, who described the archives’ work, and discussed how stories from the county’s rich heritage could bring more tourists to an ancient and “historically fascinating” region.
Mr Don, MSP for Angus North and Mearns, said there is potential for Angus and the Mearns areas to work more closely together and market the north east as a cohesive experience for tourists.
He said: “We were very interested to meet the team at the archive and see the magnificent work they do. I have also been talking with Aberdeenshire Council and attraction owners in the Mearns, and it is clear there is an appetite for some common sense, joined-up thinking.
“This way we can allow tourists fully to experience what Angus and the Mearns has to offer.”
Mr Dey, Angus South MSP, also said inter-agency co-operation would help to highlight the area’s attractions.
He said: “Angus is a treasure trove of history and we need the council and heritage agencies working in partnership with the attractions to highlight what the area has to offer.
“We need to get the message across to local people and those from further afield that there’s lots to see and enjoy in Angus.”
Angus Council’s economic development unit organised a pilot Heritage Week across the county, which was held at the start of September. The event was set up to promote heritage and cultural venues across the county as well as associated events to both the local community and visitors.
