LOCAL dwelling artist Dr James Morrison, who recently celebrated his 80th birthday, is the subject of a retrospective exhibition which opens in London later this month.

The show, entitled ‘Land and Landscape: The Painting of James Morrison’ will be at The Fleming Collection, 13 Berkeley Street, from February 19 until April 6.

Work on show will range from 1950s pictures of his home city of Glasgow, to more recent landscapes inspired by rural and coastal Scotland, as well as trips overseas.

Work by James Morrison is in the Royal Family’s collection, also J.K. Rowling’s, as well as in museums and corporate and private collections around the world.

His early work, during his student years and immediately after, is in sharp contrast to his later eye-catching land and sea scapes, often featuring dramatic skies.

Examples of the 1950s work will be on show including ‘Crown Terrace’, a view of a bleak Glasgow row of tenements. There will also be ‘Rottenrow: The Midgies’.

But also in the exhibition will be ‘St Cyrus Abstract’, an ink and tempera abstract which is influenced by the artist’s interest in physics and geometry.

Dr Morrison is a member of the Royal Scottish Academy, and the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour.
