A NOSTALGIC trip back to the 1940s is the next project to help raise funds for Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre’s Spitfire Fund.

The centre has organised a period buffet and dance in the Montrose Royal British Legion Scotland hall on September 22 when guests will be able to dance to a selection of music from the war years while dressed in 1940s style.

There will also be entertainment in the form of Kirsten Tomlinson who will perform songs of the time and members of the Esk Academy of Dancing. The wartime experience will be made complete with a ‘Then and Now’ finger buffet.

Next year is the centenary of RFC/RAF Montrose and the heritage centre will celebrate with a programme of events and exhibitions, the highlight of which will be the unveiling of a replica Spitfire aircraft which will become a permanent memorial and tourist attraction.

The centre has revived the idea of a Spitfire Fund to mark the occasion. These funds were set up during the Second World War to buy aircraft for the RAF and Arbroath ran a successful fund that raised £5,000 to buy the Spitfire ‘Red Lichtie’. A number of squadrons flew Spitfires from RAF Montrose during the early years of the war and the replica will be in the markings of one these squadrons.

Tickets, £10, are available from the Van Werninck Studio, Murray Street.
