MONTROSIANS will have another chance this weekend to take a stroll down memory lane by viewing the work of local photographer Ken Hay.

The one-day event at Montrose Museum this Saturday has been prompted by public demand following a highly successful drop-in day held at the museum in November.

Over a career spanning more than half a century Ken Hay recorded many aspects of the town and district’s life, both its public face as well as its private and personal moments, to form a unique body of work unparalleled in the area. His personal legacy, now in the possession of Angus Archives, includes an estimated one million photographs featuring around 6,000 weddings and more than 40,000 glass plates and negatives.

The archives has recruited a group of volunteers to help sort and catalogue Mr Hay’s work and archivist Fiona Scharlau said that November’s event had been invaluable in helping to place photographs in context.

She said: “The drop-in day was extremely successful and hopefully people will enjoy coming along to look at these photos and be able to tell us what’s in the photos and who was involved.”

Photographs on display will show a variety of bygone sights such as Johnston’s net menders, the Ferryden Gala Queen and a bride-to-be carrying her chanty. The free event will be open between 10.30am and 4pm, with refreshments and a slide show running all day.

Further information is available by contacting Montrose Museum on 01674 673232 or Angus Archives on 01307 468644.
