Song Shop choose ‘Oklahoma’ for this year’s show

MONTROSE-based theatre arts school The Song Shop has chosen Rogers and Hammerstein’s classic musical ‘Oklahoma’ as their end-of-year production.

The show runs in Montrose Town Hall from Tuesday to Saturday, June 26 to 30. Evening performances start at 7.30pm with a matinee on the Saturday at 2.30pm.

With well-known songs such as ‘Oh What a Beautiful Morning’, ‘The Farmer and the Cowman’, ‘People Will Say We’re in Love’ and the title song ‘Oklahoma’, audiences are set for a musical treat.

The story charts events around the turn of the 19th century when the farmers and cowboys tussled for the territory occupied by the red Indians in Oklahoma state. The plot centres around two love triangles, one more serious and sinister than the other. The confident Curly and menacing Jud compete for Laurey’s love, while by contrast Ado Annie can’t decide between Will Parker and the travelling salesman Ali Hakim. Keeping order is the matriarchal Aunt Eller, who has a rival of her own, the cantankerous Andrew Carnes.

The production is funny, moving and at times gripping. In true Song Shop fashion, there are large production numbers packed with Kenny Christie’s challenging and innovative choreography. The large cast are in their final two weeks of rehearsals, and hope that the public continue to support them by coming along to see the production.
