When our Bard visited Hillside

editorial image

A NEW memorial commemorating Robert Burns’ visit to Hillside in 1787, on his way back from seeing family in The Mearns, was unveiled in Rosemount Road on Sunday by Robert Stewart, president of the Burns World Federation.

Lines from Burns’ diary were read by Montrose and Arbroath Burns Club presidents, Doctors Tom Brighton and Rusty Smith.

These included: “Wednesday 12th September 1787: Cross North Esk River and a rich country to Craigow - go through Hillside, to Montrose, that finely situated handsome town.”
