AT THE April meeting of the Inner Wheel Club of Montrose members were treated to an excellent talk entitled ‘Jose Carreras in Scotland’ by Betsy Stirling.
After the death of her husband from leukaemia, Betsy, with her family and friends’ support, set about raising funds for research into leukaemia.
And what did she do? She invited Jose Carreras and up-and-coming Scottish soprano Lisa Milne to star in a gala concert at the Usher Hall in Edinburgh.
Undaunted by the many hurdles in arranging such an event, the result was a joyous evening in which a vast amount of money was raised. The Leukaemia Research Trust for Scotland was established and has gone on to develop a new drug and procedures for the treatment of leukaemia sufferers in Scotland.
Inner Wheel members were spellbound by Betsy’s talk and the video clips of the concert were a sheer delight. One man’s death and another man’s voice have indeed brought hope to many leukaemia patients in Scotland.
Inner Wheel member Anne Smith proposed thanks.
