AS contractors put the finishing touches to the first phase of work at Rosemount estate, locals have expressed anger that quad bikes have already been seen using newly laid paths as a track.
Contractor T & N Gilmartin were selected to carry out the full improvement scheme - set to cost approximately £61,000 – in October, the first phase of which saw new paths laid, some dead wood cleared and new trees planted.
But as contractors worked on the site, Hillside residents were shocked to see quad bikers using the newly laid paths as a track.
A spokesperson for the Rosemount Estate Environmental Improvement Association said they were disappointed to hear of the development, and said such an act was illegal.
"It's extremely disappointing and a real pity. There were a couple of them and one of the adults said that they had permission to go there now, but they don't and nobody does. It's owned by the council and quad bikes are not allowed there.
"The bikes were seen just a week after the contractors started. It's a concern because we've put a lot of effort into raising the funds.
"We don't want to stop families using Rosemount but quad bikes and the like are definitely out.
"Push-bikes, prams, horses are okay – but no motorised vehicles at all."
The first phase of work is now complete, with the second phase – the relocation of the car park to the entrance of the estate - to be completed next year.
Hillside Community Council said they were shocked that someone would take quad bikes out on the aggregate paths and called on the police to take action.
Chair Mike Wood said: "They've spent money having the paths done up and they find quad bikes on it. How long will the paths last with the quad bikes on them?
"It's shocking."
Community liaison police officer, George Abbot, said officers would look at the situation, and urged anyone who spots them to phone the police.
He said: "We've caught and charged people before and will do it again if need be. If you see them just phone us."
