THE WEATHER may not have been quite as good as last year, but this year's Donkey Derby still proved popular.

A large crowd attended the event at the East Links on Sunday afternoon, where activities included the pony races and various stalls and refreshments.

The day is organised by both the Rotary Club of Montrose and Montrose and District Round Table.

Rotary president John Fraser said: "It went fairly well. It was good weather but quite breezy – we were a bit concerned about the tents.

"A lot of people turned out. Not as many as last year but it was a better day then.

"We had around eight organisations who came along with various stalls – that's something we've been trying to encourage.

"Tayside Fire and Rescue were doing a demonstration on how to put out a chip pan fire, so that was a bit different."

Round Table chairman Andrew Boyd said: "It was a pretty good day. I was on the burger stall which was absolutely constant for the whole two and a half hours so I never really got a chance to look up.

"There were lots of different organisations there. I'm pretty sure we'll have made a few quid.

"The events benefits are two-fold – the donkey derby provides a community service, but it also raises money for good causes."

The winner of the women's penalty competition was Sarah Laing from the Star Hotel. The competition was sponsored by the Corner House Hotel.
Events included face painting by the Montrose Amateur Operatic Society and performances by the Gordon School of Dancing.

Refreshments were on hand, such as the Round Table's barbecue and the Montrose YM's ice cream and strawberries.

Local organisations running stalls included Montrose Community Council with a bottle stall and the Scottish Wildlife Trust.

Takings from the event will be split between the Rotary Club and the Round Table and will be donated to various charitable causes.
