THE APOLLO Players are preparing to turn Montrose Town Hall into the backstreets and gambling dens of New York for their 20th anniversary production, ‘Guys and Dolls’.
Casting for the show began with a workshop session last month and the principal characters have now been cast, with rehearsals for the May show already under way.
Highly acclaimed for the high standard of their previous shows, the Apollo Players have enjoyed success with past productions including ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, ‘A Chorus Line’, ‘West Side Story’, ‘Me and My Girl’, ‘Barnum’, ‘Copacabana’ and, two years ago, their popular presentation of ‘Beauty and the Beast’.
Formed by husband and wife Derek and Evelyn Noble with best friend Tom Murray in 1993, the Players are based in Montrose but draw members from a much wider area and aimed to present newly-released shows available to amateurs or those which other companies may not wish to stage.
The idea worked and their first production, ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ attracted a cast from Arbroath, Carnoustie, Forfar, Brechin, Stonehaven, Laurencekirk and the Mearns and was stage in May 1994.
Derek will again fill the roles of director and musical director for ‘Guys and Dolls’, and, as in previous productions, will be assisted by Mina Welsh who also takes full responsibility for the choreography of the productions.
Featuring a number of classic songs including ‘I’ll Know’, ‘A Bushel and a Peck’, ‘Luck Be A Lady’ and ‘Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat’, the show is sure to be an energetic choice for the cast and a popular production with audiences.
