Beginner entries increase at show

MONTROSE Horticultural Society's annual show has proved that there are plenty of green-fingered locals out there with beginner entries increasing for the second year in a row.

Honorary secretary, William Nicoll, said the event was very successful, with plenty of people coming to see the entries.

He said: "A lot of people came to visit. Beginner numbers were up as was the industrial section.

"Vegetables and pot plants were down as was cut flowers, but this was due to the weather and the fact that another show was being held at the same time.

"I'd like to thank the public for coming to visit, the exhibitors for taking part and the committee for their hard work organising the show."

Montrose Horticultural Society trophy winners are as follows: Most points in horticultural classes, Sam Millar (Bogindollo); Best exhibit in show, Ed Mitchell (Lunan); second best exhibit in show, Mrs C Dey (Montrose).

Table of pot plants Class 1, Colin Stewart (Glenskenno); table of pot plants Class 2, Mary Robb (Montrose); pot plants for table decoration Class 4, Mary Robb (Montrose).

Display of fuchsia Class 5, Colin Stewart (Glenskenno); 2 fuchsias bush, double 2 varieties Class 13, Mary Robb (Montrose); collection of vegetables Class 50, Ed Mitchell (Lunan); mini collection of 4 vegetables Class 51, Sam Millar (Bogindollo).

3 blanched leek Class 56, Mr D Duke (Brechin); best tomatoes in show Class 58-61, Ingrid Burghes (Montrose); best onion sets classes 64 and 65, Mr D Duke (Brechin); collection of onions Class 67, Ed Mitchell (Lunan); collection of shallots Class 72, Sam Millar (Bogindollo); collection of potatoes Class 89, Sam Millar (Bogindollo).

Best exhibit in fruit section outwith collection, Mrs J Hendry (Kinaldie); collection of dahlias Class 124, Ed Mitchell (Lunan); 3 vases of dahlias Class 124, W Ainsworth (Arbroath); 6 vases cut flowers Class 154, Kevin Whyte (Glenbervie); large gladiola Class 155, Mr T Derver (Brechin); 3 vases sweet peas Class 159, Ian Fraser (Lunan); best vase of sweet peas, Ian Fraser (Lunan).

One vase Floribunda roses Class 184, Ingrid Burghes (Montrose); container of cut flowers, Mary Robb (Montrose).

Angus Floral art championship, most points in Classes 223-226, Mrs C Dey (Montrose); best exhibit in floral art section, Mrs C Dey (Montrose).
