HESTER Howie has been named as the 2008/09 Montrose Citizen of the Year.
Mrs Howie is Chair of the Governors at Dorward House and is a director at Montrose Day Care Centre.
The Review teamed up with the Rotary Club of Montrose to find the person who has made the most outstanding contribution to the community.
One nomination for Mrs Howie said: "She has been and is the driving force behind the fund raising for the development of Dorward House. She has personally contacted trusts and other bodies who may have been able to help and has devoted a large amount of her time to this cause."
Another nomination mentioned how she had offered her services to Dorward House after retiring from Angus Council Social Work department.
The nomination said: "Under Hester's leadership they (Dorward House] put forward a building programme which met all their needs. Despite the fact that this ambitious project failed to attract the level of funding hoped for, she had the courage to see it through... The result is a facility of which the town can be justifiably proud. Montrose owes Hester Howie a great debt of gratitude."
Mrs Howie said: "I am very surprised. It's quite an honour. I really see it as more of a recognition of Dorward House.
"I couldn't do it on my own, without the help from the present board and others over the years. It is a personal award but it also recognises the trustees of Dorward House.
"I also appreciate the Rotary members for acknowledging the work I've done and they have been tremendous supporters of Dorward House.
"I think my past experience has been a help in the development, and I guess I have a particular ability.
"It's been three years of very hard work not just for me but for a number of people.
"I couldn't have done it without the trustees and the executive board. I've also had the support of my husband, my family and even my grandchildren who get dragged in.
"I'm very pleased. I really enjoy working with Corral Shepherd (manager], the staff and the residents.
"It's wonderful to see how they have responded to their new surroundings. Dorward House made a brave decision but to see the results has been very worthwhile with the refurbishment of the house and the new Fairview unit. It's quite wonderful."
Mrs Howie was presented with an engraved shield and a cheque for her nominated charity at a presentation on Tuesday night.
