A NEW Montrose fundraiser has proved popular and organisers now hope it will become an annual event.

Montrose Round Table teamed up with the local cricket club on Saturday, to hold a Cricket Sixes tournament during the day and a real ale festival at night.

The beer festival was such a success that Montrosians managed to drink the ten different ales dry before the end of the night.

B.B.E.T. were the winners of the cricket tournament, beating Montrose Milan in the final.

Chairman of the Round Table, Andrew Boyd said: "It was a really good day and everyone seemed to enjoy it. The cricket was good fun and there were at least 150 people there during the day, with quite a few spectators.

"Some people moved on, but a lot of new people came down for the music side. There were around 80 people there at night.

"We sold out of beer and had to make a few Tesco runs to get more. The first keg was gone by 4pm and the last of it ran out around 9pm. It is difficult to judge how much beer to get in for the first event.

"We probably emptied Tesco and Somerfield trying to get in enough alternatives. It was a bit mad!

"The weather was good – perfect for cricket. We had a bit of rain around 10.30pm, but by that time I don't think anyone would have noticed! The burgers went down well and we must have sold around 300."

Mr Boyd said the plan is to make the joint festival an annual event, but that there needs to be quite a few people willing to help.

He said: "We were a bit short on numbers at some points, so others helped us out. We just need to make sure the support is there from the guys as it takes a lot of people to organise an event like this."
