A day at the races at the East Links

THE ANNUAL Montrose Donkey Derby, organised by the Rotary Club of Montrose and Montrose and District Round Table, was held on the East Links on Sunday.

After the disappointment of having to postpone the event in June because of the weather, the organisers were delighted to get a dry day, although it was windy at times.

Event convener John Fraser said: “With so many events being cancelled this year, including the Montrose Highland Games, we were delighted to be able to have a full afternoon of races and other activities.”

Apart from betting on the nine pony races, visitors could try their skill at football, putting or the coconut shy.

At times there was a big queue at the barbecue, where hot food was a definite favourite.

There were displays of dancing by the Gordon School of Dancing, and also displays by 45 Marine Commando from RM Condor, the Coastguard, RNLI and Tayside Fire and Rescue.

Youngsters who attended enjoyed the bouncy castle and various rides and many had their face painted or got a balloon model.

There was no charge for admission to the event, which kicked off as scheduled at 1.30pm
