Americana in Montrose

DAVID Olney and Sergio Webb will bring the best of Americana to Montrose Folk Club next Tuesday evening at 8 pm in the usual venue of the Links Hotel, Montrose.

David, who is based in Nashville, is regarded as one of the best songwriters in the U.S.A. His songs have been covered by numerous artists, including Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Dell McCoury and many others.

Originally from a rock background, David has a powerful Blues-tinged vocal style. He will be accompanied in his appearances on his current UK tour by an amazing electric guitarist in Sergio Webb.

David started out in music as the lead singer of a band called The X-Rays, who made a big name on the Nashville Alternative music scene in the late seventies. Later between 1981 and 1999, he released six critically acclaimed albums on Rounder Records.

As a songwriter, he has a sharp literary mind that cuts to the bone of the human condition. Whether the subject matter is heartbreak or armed robbery, his cinematic song writing style and fearless approach to lyric writing have won him a reputation as a kind of musical outlaw.

The latest CD release by David Olney entitled “One Tough Town” on Austin-Based Loud House Records, is a sort of retrospective of 100 years of American Music. It features Blue, Country, Rock, Swing and all stops in between. David has previously been featured as the Songwriter of the Week on the Iain Anderson programme on BBC Radio Scotland.

Next Tuesday is a rare opportunity to hear an outstanding American songwriter in Angus. Everyone is welcome. The doors open at 7. 30 pm with David Olney and Sergio Webb on stage at 8 pm.
