Angus Council is warning people that there may be a home contents insurance scam circulating the area.

A local resident has informed the authority that they received a call from someone claiming to be from the council, calling about the Home Contents Insurance Scheme but then wanting to speak about replacement doors and windows.

An Angus Council spokespersons said: “The council would only contact a tenant about the scheme in relation to an existing policy or in response to an application which had been received.

“No unsolicited telephone contact would be made in relation to the scheme and there would be no attempt to sell other goods or services.

“If you, or anyone you know, receives a phone call from someone claiming to be from the council, and has any doubt at all, end the call and phone Accessline 08452 777 778, to verify the caller’s legitimacy.

“Remember not to call back on any other number ‒ eg one given by the person you speak to on the phone, as this is often part of a scam.”
