FRIENDS of the picturesque redundant Benholm Kirk, near Johnshaven, are organising two events over the next three months to raise the profile of this ancient and beautiful building.
April 21 is the official opening date of the Family History Room in the church vestry. The ceremony will be performed by Tristram Clarke, an archivist at the National Archives of Scotland, who will be giving advice to budding family historians. Old parish birth, marriage and mort cloth records relating to Benholm Kirk will be available for research.
So if your ancestors lived in the Benholm area, this is where to find out more about your past. This facility will be ongoing and open to all.
A second event, ‘A Year in Bloom’ will take place June 15, 16 and 17, 10am to 4pm. Over the weekend the small church will be filled with wonderful floral displays depicting a year in flowers.
Benholm Kirk (in the care of the Scottish Redundant Churches Trust) is open daily and well worth a visit.
