AS PART of the recently launched Taste of Angus campaign, a week-long food festival is to be held across the county from September 1 to 8.

The Taste of Angus Festival celebrates Angus’s ever-increasing reputation as one of the best places in Scotland for fresh produce and high quality food and drink.

“The fields of Angus are renowned for top quality asparagus, strawberries, potatoes and beef, our glens are a source of excellent game and lamb, and the seafood caught off our shores is hard to beat,” said Councillor Mairi Evans, Angus Council tourism spokesperson.

“Local, high quality food is a massive tourist attraction – and a definite bonus for the people who live in Angus.

“This festival will highlight the fabulous, locally produced ingredients which are readily-available throughout the county and will hopefully encourage more people to buy locally and seasonally – and to support local producers.”

The festival will be launched at the Dundee Flower Festival on August 31.

From then until September 2, visitors to the Taste of Angus stand will be able to sample mouth-watering Angus delicacies such as Forfar Bridies, soft fruits from local berry fields and Arbroath Smokies.

As part of the Taste of Angus Festival, Angus Farmers’ Market at Montrose on September 1 will feature even more stalls than normal selling tasty goodies grown, picked, produced or caught in Angus.

There will also be cookery demonstrations by top local chef, David McReadie.

During the week-long festival, there will be lots of opportunities to sample the very best of Angus produce, with several local restaurants, hotels, pubs and cafés offering ‘A Taste of Angus’ on their menus.

Specialities featured include Caffe Barista’s Arbroath Smokie and Leek Ramekin; Local Hog Roast at the Colliston Inn; and Ham Haddie (poached smoked haddock with smoked ham and cheese sauce) at the Pear Tree Restaurant, where guid auld Steak Mince, complete with tatties and a mealie pudding, will also be served.

To bring the festival to a close, the Farmers’ Market at Forfar Mart on September 8 will feature an excellent selection of local growers and producers.

There will include the famous Iain R. Spink, who will be providing market-goers with one of the most recognisable flavours of Angus - Arbroath Smokies.

“I’m proud to be involved with the Taste of Angus Festival as it gives me the opportunity to showcase my Arbroath Smokies to an audience of appreciative and discerning consumers,” commented Iain, who can usually be located at an event by following your nose towards the wee spiral of smoke.

He went on: “In Angus, we have some truly fantastic produce which we should shout about at every opportunity.

“With lots of very average and often imported foods being stocked on supermarket shelves these days, it’s important to let everyone know about the top quality food available on our doorstep – produce and products which have been reared, produced and processed here in Angus.”
