A MONTROSE hairdresser has reached the final of a prestigious national hairdressing competition.

Bekki Smith-Dutton, owner of Cloud 9 in Arbroath’s West Port, won the north of England and Scotland section of the NYC Redken Hair Awards 2011 in the Colour Genius category.

She travelled to London last month with her model Steph Strachan, also from Montrose, and created an autumn winter look, including bright copper and red tones styled with a heavy fringe and dramatic curls.

After winning praise from a panel of top hairdressing experts, including celebrity stylist Lee Stafford, Bekki, along with staff members Nikki Webster and Danielle McWalter, was invited to Manchester last Tuesday, to be told that they had won.

The national stage of the competition, at Brixton Academy in London in September. If they are lucky enough to win, a trip to New York will be among the prizes, and they will also be involved in their own fashion shoot abroad and have a double page spread in a top hair magazine.

Bekki said: “We did our research into autumn/winter trends so that is why we decided to go for the copper and red.”

At the next stage of the competition in London, the entire salon staff will travel down along with their model, Steph, who will show off the team’s creation by strutting down the catwalk.

Not only will they be colouring and styling her hair, they also have to complete the look with make-up and clothes.

Bekki added: “There are going to be around 1,000 people in the Brixton Academy so it will be exciting to see Steph go down the catwalk.”
