Charities in Angus are being warned to double check big increases in their water rates following a series of demands from Business Stream, Scottish Water’s business arm.
Lib Dem MSP Alison McInnes has urged them to get in touch if they suspect they have been wrongly charged.
She said: “Bills worth tens of thousands of pounds have been sent to some charities in the last six months even though they are exempt from paying. Small charities with a net annual income of less than £64,500 can apply to Scottish Water to be exempt.
“However, the confusing system, which stipulates that organisations had to be exempt since 1999, means that many are not clear whether they have to pay.
“I am concerned there is confusion amongst both charities and Business Stream.
“Organisation believing they have been wrongly charged should contact email@example.com or on 01358 729962.”
